EJ&T - Deuteronomy 19: Landmarks, witnesses, and the no pity rule

In the Every Jot and Tittle project, I am listing all of the Bible's commandments from Genesis to Revelation, in accordance with Jesus's words in Matthew 5:18-19. I have no idea how many commandments I'll find, but Jewish tradition claims there are 613. See here for a list of those that I've found so far.

  1. Don't remove your neighbor's landmark.
  2. Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it. Deuteronomy 19:14

Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour's landmark. And all the people shall say, Amen. Deuteronomy 27:17

Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. Proverbs 22:28

Remove not the old landmark. Proverbs 23:10

  3. At least two witnesses are required to convict someone of a crime.
  4. At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death. Deuteronomy 17:6

One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established. Deuteronomy 19:15

In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established. 2 Corinthians 13:1

  5. Punish false witnesses by doing to them what they falsely accused the defendant of doing.
  6. If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong; Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the Lord, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you. Deuteronomy 19:16-19

  7. Don't pity.
  8. And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. Deuteronomy 19:20
